Rest in Peace Naomi - You’ll be Forever Missed

To those who loved Naomi:
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for helping to make Picture A Cure on June 13, 2009 such an amazing evening. It is difficult for me to explain in words how much this night meant to Naomi, her family and me. When I told Naomi that I wanted to put together a benefit, in her honor, she said, “ Cheryl, why would people be interested in coming? ” I tried to explain to her something that I already knew. Naomi has touched so many lives, in so many ways. I do not think she really believed me until the night of the event. I was with Naomi when she entered, and the look in her eyes, and the smile on her face, said it all. Naomi felt great, looked remarkable, and was so thrilled to be surrounded by family, friends, and business associates. It truly was a magical evening.
Unfortunately, Naomi’s health deteriorated rapidly after Picture A Cure and on July 1, 2009 she lost her fight with cancer. Regardless of the outcome, I know that it meant more than anything for her to witness the love, support, and compassion from her family, friends, clients, and from so many others in our community.
I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. Although it is difficult to understand why Naomi was taken from us so soon, I do know that because of her, many of us have a different perspective on life. Whether it be, skin care awareness, planning for our futures, focusing on the important things in life, and realizing that we must live each day as if it were our last.
Naomi will not be forgotten. She will live on through her son, her husband, family and friends, and through her photographs and the sacred memories we are all so fortunate to have of her.
Thank you again for your support and generosity. You are truly appreciated.
Warmest Regards,
Cheryl Tveras

UPDATE JULY 1st 2009: At 5am this morning, Naomi lost her brave battle with cancer. She passed away at Mayo hospital surrounded by her loving family. May this website become a place for sharing prayers, memories and messages for Naomi and her family.
Just back in March of this year, 29-year-old wedding and portrait photographer Naomi Williams of Ponte Vedra Beach was living a normal life; watching her 2½-year-old son Jake grow bigger by the day, running a successful studio and together with her husband Nik of 8 years, they were looking for a bigger home and hoping for a little brother or sister for Jake.
That was before everything changed. What started as a pain in Naomi’s back led to several tests and surgeries and then, the verdict: Stage 4 Metastatic Melanoma - a type of skin cancer which has spread from its original site to other parts of the body, in Naomi’s case into her spine, pelvis and lungs.
The emotional burden of this grim discovery and the journey ahead is difficult enough. We can all offer words of support and our heartfelt prayers, but there’s something equally powerful we can do for Naomi, Nik and Jake. Like so many other, the Williams family lives on dual income. Obviously, Naomi is unable to work causing a financial burden that this young couple simply can’t concentrate on right now.
Pictures of Hope is a collaborative response initiated by family and friends of Naomi Williams. We are trying to raise funds for Naomi and her family who have just begun a very tough and challenging journey. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of currently approved treatments - such as Chemotherapy and Radiation - for Stage 4 Metastic Melanoma are very limited. Should Naomi’s body not respond to her current treatment, she and Nik will be seeking alternative treatment programs abroad which have had greater rates of success but are not covered under insurance.
In addition to this website initiative, we have also designed an event called Picture A Cure which is aimed at raising awareness of skin cancer - so that other families can be reminded of the importance in taking measures in disease protection, living in the moment, and planning ahead if disaster should strike. Picture A Cure is scheduled for June 13th 2009 and will help raise funds for Naomi and for skin cancer research. Tickets will have a suggested donation value of $50 per person. Due to space considerations, a limited number of tickets are available. If you’d like to request a ticket, please email your name, address, tel and your desired number of tickets to: info@naomiwilliams.com.
Please join us as we support an incredible woman who has had a huge impact on so many lives - through her work as a wedding and portrait photographer, as a mother, wife and as a friend.

You are in my prayers. Naomi, please read Psalm 91over and over again. Read it out loud so that you can hear the words. This Psalm is full of G-d’s promises of deliverence. Dwell on the words until they take root in your heart. In another part of the Scriptures, the Lord admonishes. My son (daughter) incline you ears unto my sayings. Let them not depart from you eyes. For the are life unto those who find them. And health unto their flesh.

Naomi,
Someone from my church (Celebration)forward your email to me. Normally I dont open emails about people I dont know but as soon as I saw your name I recognized it, You know how many times i’ve called you about lancome. So, I opened it and I was devastated to know that you are having to face this terrible fact. You and your family will be in my prayers. Its easy to say but i can imagine how hard it should be but stay strong and more important happy, optimistic (regardless of what science says),strong in your faith and believe with all your heart and soul that God will carry you out of this situation. There is NOTHING impossible for our Lord. He is the Doctor of all Doctors! If science cant He will! You speak to that cancer and let it know it is not going to win, that God has given you all the power you need to fight it. I’m believing in a miracle for your life and I declare you victorious in the name of the Lord! Naomi, besides my prayers for you there is not a whole lot I can do but if you are feeling down one day or not so pretty (cause you know that us girls have those days) just give me a call at the counter and I can pamper you with a makeover or something, ok.363-1100 x268

You do not know us…but we heard about your battle. My wife has been fighting her melanoma for years and has progressed to stage IV. She has been receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX because as you know, the treatment options in Jacksonville are limited. She is doing quite well because there are options out there! Please if you have any questions do not hesitate to email!
We were so shocked to hear your story on TV the other day. At first we couldn’t believe what we were hearing (or seeing, is that really you they’re talking about?) It was not long ago that we were sharing a laugh and saying goodbye at the Lofts… and grumbling about moving all that stuff (at least you didn’t have fish tanks)! Naomi, along with everyone else in your full, wonderful life, we are going to pray to God for your recovery. Cheryl was kind enough to call Rob and they talked today. I hope you won’t mind if I send out an email blast to all of our friends in the media, Heart Gallery photographers and adoption caseworkers, courts, et al to support your valiant fight. Not only were you our office neighbor but also one of our fabulous volunteer photographers. Now, it’s time for us to rally for you!! God Bless you, Nik and little Jake.
Love Rob and Jill
My thoughts and prayers are with you for complete and total healing. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” Jer 29:11

Naomi, Nik and Jake,
Know that you are all in my prayers. we have never met, but share the same journey. Melanoma has entered my life in August, 2006 and life has changed. One thing I can give to you is this, stay strong, cry when you want to and never, nver, never give up! What ever lies ahead, take sometime each day and remember the events, and thank God for the strength to make it through another day.
Stay strong my melanoma sister. Email me if you need any support.
Naomi, you don’t know me. My son is a player on your brother Jack’s lacrosse team. I do not consider myself a religious person, however after hearing about you and your fight, I intend to pray for you. Your story is moving and touched me deeply. I know for you it is far from a story and the reality must be incredibly difficult to deal with on a day to day basis. Just keep fighting. We are ALL rooting for you!
Sarah Montgomery

Lou
Sweet Naomi. I am praying for you. I know lots of people are saying this and it is because we all in some way have come to know you. You are such an amazing girl. Thank you for being just that. I love you and truely pray God stirs up a new hunger inside of you for Him. He loves you and wants you to be in fellowship with him. Nothing crazy. Just tell him what you are feeling. He is listening. He created you and knows exactly what you are dealing with. Let Him love you that’s all He’s asking for. If there is any thing you need please do not hesitate. I love you sweetie and I thank God in advance for what He is going to do in you. I truely believe it. Love, Lauren
I just learned about your situation, and I’m so incredibly sorry. My heart breaks for you and your entire family. I pray that you respond to treatment and get on the fast track to the road of recovery! If it makes you feel better, your story is going to help thousands of people. My father currently has a sore on his arm that might be skin cancer, but he hasn’t taken the time to have it checked yet. This really puts things in perspective, and I’m going to get on his case every single day to make sure he sees a doctor! He doesn’t have health insurance which makes it hard, but you can’t put a price on someone’s life.
Dear Naomi,
Where do I begin. When I came to visit you at the hospital right after your back surgery and we got to pray together I did not hear anything else until this past Sunday evening when we were with our cousins who go to a home fellowship meeting at your assist Meaghan’s house on Wednesday nights. They said they were praying for them because they are leaving on an overseas trip tomorrow and they also prayed for a photographer named Naomi who Meaghan works with who had cancer. I kept putting the pieces together and then they went to look for an email they had recieved from Meaghan regarding “her friend Naomi” which had your “fornaomi.com” website. We watched the video that Mary Baer did and our hearts sunk. We immediately began to pray for you and all through the night I would wake up and you would be on my heart so I am continuing to lift you up to Our Creator God, through His Son Jesus, KNOWING that He hears our prayers and IS right there with you. In the Old Testament in the Book of Jeremiah there is a verse of scripture that you can hold on to. It says “Call to Me and I will answer you and show you what I can do”. (paraphrased of course). We love you and wanted you to know that you are not alone in this battle. You have a Strong Advocate that paid the price on the cross for you and is still today reaching out to you. Rest easy and know that LOVE never fails!
I wrote a paper on Healing that comes from god. it has very specific steps on how to allow God to perform a miracle for you. For a number of reasons God has guided me to give this to you. I met your brother Mr. Popper in Mahopac after I had just been talking to my daughter about you. If you would like for me to e-mail it to you I will. It is 17 pages and it will help.
And my sons name is Jake.
Naomi:

Naomi:
You helped to document one of the happiest days in the life of our family, the wedding of our son Mark to Patricia (the Odom/Gordon wedding). Your pictures were beautiful and you were gracious, professional and completely unobtrusive. I want you to know that I just got off my knees in prayer for you and will continue to pray and ask God to heal you. I will ask the rest of our family to do the same thing.
Nancy Gordon
My Dearest Naomi, Nik & Jake,
Your photography talent is ever so prevalent in my family’s life and in our homes. You see, you were my daughter’s wedding photography - Tiffany & John Townsend. On their special day, you were 8 months pregnant with Jake. I believe their wedding was your last job before the delivery of your precious son. You became part of our family on that day. You touched our hearts then and you are touching our hearts now. Keep your beautiful spirit and self uplifted with the love of family and friends around you. We are all praying for you, your husband and adorable son. Love, Capt Tony & Margot Martin

Naomi, you are an incredible woman, your joy is contagious! You have my thought and prayers with you through this fight. Please let me know how I can help.
All my love,

Way to go Saturday night guys! Much love!
Naomi-
I met you only once briefly passing at the last wedding show in Jacksonville. As, a wedding photographer myself I was drawn to your work and thought you had such a wonderful beautiful energy. Your images capture that. Keep shooting everyday, through this time. Let your images be your journal. Let it help you fight. Let your images speak for you.
I am praying for you and your family.
Hi, Naomi. This is Meghan’s mom. I’m thinking of you this morning, as I do every morning when I pray for you. I know that today is your chemo day, so I’m asking the Lord to be your strength and bring you through again this week as you progress toward total healing. I was thrilled to hear the good report from your doctors after Don, Jennifer and Meg prayed for you several weeks ago. The Lord loves you so much and I am truly convinced that He will pull you through this as you lean on and trust in His love and goodness. Know that when you feel too weak to fight, there is a great host of people and angels fighting for you. I bless you today with rest and peace and freedom from fear. We will be moving back to Jacksonville next month and I hope to be able to see you then.
With love and prayers always,
Pam Stewart
Naomi,

Dear Naomi and family, I heard of your situation through Jennifer Symmes.I was her “co-worker” in planning Mary & Marty’s wedding ; that you so exquisitely photographed. I do not know you except through the beautiful outporing of support that is communicated on this web-site. I can deduce that you are much loved, cherished ,and prayed for by countless people that your obvious grace , love and talent has touched.I WILL BE HONORED TO PRAY FOR YOU ,ALONG WITH THE PRAYER WARRIORS IN MY WOMAN’S BIBLE STUDY. I FELT LED TO SHARE 2 THINGS WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY…The first is that when God led his children out of Egypt, they had their “desert” experience to redefine who he was and is in their daily lives. As to that point, understand that you are being faced with one of our most difficult challenges: to live just one day at a time. There was a definite lesson in being given MANNA for just one day…TOTAL trust in the Lord’s provision for just that exact 24 hrs. of time. I think we all fool ourselves into believing that we have our lives planned out months or even years in advance. But the creator of the universe knew when he made us that 24 hrs is about MAX for us, so lean into him and his word and trust him for your “one day at a time”life. I have found it to be way more manageable than larger chunks of time!! The second thing I wanted to share with you is a poem given to me at a MOST pivotal point in my life.Read it and interpret the word the LORD gives you through it.: ” I had a tiny box,a precious box of human love…a spikenard of great price; I kept it close within my heart of hearts. And scarce would lift the lid lest it should waste it’s perfume on the air. One day, a strange deep sorrow came with crushing weight, and fell upon my costly treasure, sweet and rare, and broke the box into atoms. All my heart rose in dismay and sorrow at this waste. But as I mourned, behold; a miracle of grace divine. My human love was changed to heaven’s own, and poured out in healing streams on other broken hearts, while soft and clear a voice above me whispered “Child of mine, with comfort wherewith thou art comforted, from this time forth, go comfort others. And thou shalt know blessed fellowship with ME, whose BROKEN heart of love hath healed the world.” God will Bless you and your family on this road not chosen . In his never-changing love and grace, Abbie Stennes

I did not know Naomi or any of her family or friends. I heard of her on the news, and found this site and would check back from time to time. I share a portion of your sorrow as I’ve lost a grandchild to cancer, and presently my daughter is going thru treatment for Stage IV Melanoma. It will be hard to stay strong, if you can remember all Naomi went through the past few months, you can make it through, she went through the worst and would want you to hang on and one day smile again. Love Gloria

I never knew Naomi, I have never met your family, but we share the same God and I know Naomi is precious in God’s sight. That is why He called her home. May Jake remember her smile and may Nik be filled with the love that poured from Naomi’s heart. Just remember:
Psalms 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
And on those nights where life seems too much to handle, God reaffirms us-
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”- Phil 4:13
Don’t give up. Never give up. Your family will be prayed for and lifted up and may he strengthen, comfort, guide and bring peace to each of your hearts.
With deepest sympathy and love in Christ always

To Nik Jake and Naomi’s family -
A world of love to you all.
I’m so sad to her of Naomi’s passing…saying many prayers for your family and friends.
I was friends with Naomi in high school and spent many occasions with her. Within our group of friends we wanted to know if she would be any particular happening. She added a special something with her presence and smile. Naomi was glowingly vibrant, strikingly beautiful, intelligent and somewhat eccentric.
Years ago, I heard that she had moved and was married before anybody else that I knew. I’m happy that she was able to cram so much life into–what turned out to be–limited years. She didn’t waste any time building a family, potentiating her talent and setting an example we can all only hope to follow.
I have been shocked and saddened beyond words–for two days–after hearing about this. My thoughts are with her family. I will never forget her.
I want add a personal note that I left out above (in my more formal thoughts)… as a teenager (I’m one year older than her) my friends and I would sometimes hang out in her attic bedroom.
Since it was an attic bedroom it had a curved ceiling and it was amenable to becoming a canvas for something cool.
When I first found out that she had passed on one of the first things that came to my mind was that she took that canvas of a ceiling and placed glowing stars all over it.
It wasn’t just that she had glowing stars but how they were methodically aligned. It was indicative of somebody who was in awe with the world around them and very artistic.
I remember saying to her that I was impressed with how she did the layout. I believe Naomi told me she recreated an entire contstillation! It was clear she was a perfectionist.
Just based on something that simple it’s no surprise she turned out to be a creative superstar in photography. She truly glowed as bright as those stars and it stands out in my mind years later.
Even in the face of death — the final frame of the above video is of her charismatic smile.
To her husband and baby … I believe she will watch down upon you and glow as bright as the entire constillation that she recreated all those years ago.
I met Naomi when she came at the JCA for parent oriantation,She was with her son Jake A cute adorable son and his mom and I will never forget her smile.Than first day of Jake’s school when Nik Naomi and Jake came Perfact family very loving. And I start meeting Naomi very often, Very good and caring mother always use to pack very healthy lunch and snack and some calcium tabs.Always concerned about her son Best,Best Best Mom.I just cannot forget her smile.I am sorry nik and jake same time I feel that she is relaxed now from all the pain she was suffering.May god keep her with peace .
Naomi was very special. My family and I will cherish the time that we spent together and wonderful pictures she took on her “day off” at the beach. I am sad that she is gone, but the mark that she left on my family and my dear friend Nik brings a smile, and after all, that was always one of her greatest gifts.
Our deepest sympathy to Naomi’s family. I smile every time I walk through my front door and pass by the beautiful photos she took of my husband and I five years ago. She was an amazing person and I feel privileged to have known her.
My thoughts and warm wishes go out to Naomi’s family. May you find comfort in each other.

We are so sorry for your loss. May peace find your family through this difficult time.
Our thought and prayers are with you at this time.
I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I first met Naomi when she loaded cameras for me back on Long Island for a high school graduation, I believe she was a junior in high school at the time. Having worked with Naomi and then Nick several years later, It was obvious that these two were a perfect match.
I have told others that Naomi was the kind of person that upon meeting her, you considered her a friend. She was warm, kind and an overall fantastic person.
I wish Nick, the Popper and Williams families, and all their friends strength in their grieving.
My heart broke when I read this. It happened so fast.
Our prayers are with Naomi’s family. We are so sorry.

Sorry this is a bit late - I just learned, today, of Naomi’s passing. I had just the briefest meeting with Naomi in October of last year - at Image X in NOLA. But even in that few minutes of party chit chat, it was very evident what a wonderful person she was - one of those you just instantly get a “good vibe” from.
Nik, Jake, we’ve never met but I wish you and your collective family peace and comfort in this time of loss.
God bless you.
I am so sorry for you loss! Naomi was a beautiful and charismatic woman whose beauty shone from inside! My prayers go out to the family!

Nik I only just discovered this shocking news. I am so sorry. I emailed Naomi yesterday as I was thinking about Australia and Cheryl emailed me back. My hands are still shaking. I can’t imagine how Naomi must have felt to be leaving you two. She always told me what a fantastic husband you were and how you were so easy to live with. My thoughts will be with you and Jake always.
I had the great pleasure to have met and worked only briefly with Naomi on a photography shoot just before she became ill.
You can imagine how shocked I was to read that Naomi passed away July 1st.
